Take a look at these amazing creatures. By the end, perhaps you'll have learnt something new about these lovely and fragile marine animals.

Severe Abnormalities Found In Fukushima Butterflies

Exposure to radioactive material released into the environment has caused mutations in butterflies found in Japan, a study suggests. Scientists found an increase in leg, antennae and wing shape mutations among butterflies collected following the 2011 Fukushima accident. The link between the mutations and the radioactive material was shown by laboratory experiments, they report.

By comparing mutations found on the butterflies collected from the different sites, the team found that areas with greater amounts of radiation in the environment were home to butterflies with much smaller wings and irregularly developed eyes.

Cheetah Breaks Speed Record - Beats Usain Bolt By Seconds

Sarah the cheetah has shattered the world record for the standing 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 5.95 seconds - making Olympian Usain Bolt's world record of 9.58 seconds look positively stodgy by comparison.

On a USA Track & Field-certified course established by the Cincinnati Zoo, the 11-year-old cheetah was radar-timed at up to 61 miles (98 kilometers) an hour. Sarah's sprint is the fastest timed 100 meters ever run by anything on the planet.

Curious Gopher Lives Under Rocket Launchpad

This gopher lives under the rocket launchpad at Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome. The creature was filmed completely by chance after a space agency cameraman accidentally left his camera rolling on the ground at the base. The gopher seemed quite happy with his home, despite it being perilously close to the pad where astronauts blast off for the International Space Station.

Sliding With Sharks

This is possibly not for the faint hearted. The swimming pool of the Golden Nugget hotel in Las Vegas has a water slide. So what, you might ask, before you realize that the slide runs directly through the hotel's giant tank aquarium, which is full of tuna not to mention sharks. It's one way to get up close without getting bitten.

4 Animals That Ran for Mayor (And Won!)

Has the presidential race soured you on politics as usual? Next time you're in the voting booth, consider casting your ballot for a nontraditional candidate. Like Stubbs, a cat who was elected mayor of the town of Talkeetna, Alaska in 1997, as a write-in candidate.

As of 2012, Stubbs is still honorary mayor. These towns are also enjoying the benefits of a super hands-off - or more precisely, paws-off - government.

They've just come out with their list of Olympians for the natural world - champions that range from the fleet cheetah to the humble fungus.

Animal Mowers

Lawn maintenance can quickly become a major drag. Allowing animals to maintain the lawn makes a lot of sense. Instead of spending money on gas that pollutes the air and pesticides that poison the ground, homeowners can keep the grass trimmed while also feeding their animals.

Of course, keeping any animal requires a commitment of time and money, so this is not a good option for those who are merely too lazy to mow their own lawns. With the right research, animal lawnmowers can add value to your life beyond keeping the grass short.
Which animal is best suited to your needs?

Lobstermen Finding More Odd Colors In The Catch

In recent years, accounts of bright blue, orange, yellow, calico, white and even split lobsters - one color on one side, another on the other - have jumped. It's now common to hear several stories a month of a lobsterman bringing one of the quirky crustaceans to shore.

It could be simply because advances in technology - cellphone cameras and social media - make it easier to spread the word about bizarre lobster sightings. It's also likely more weird lobsters are being caught because the overall harvest has soared.
