The Strange Elegance Of The Giraffe-Necked Antelope

Found in Eastern Africa ranging from Somalia to Kenya there is a slightly odd looking long-necked creature that is reminiscent of a giraffe but that is one thing it most certainly is not.
With large eyes and ears and an incredibly slender neck, you may be forgiven for thinking that the Giraffe-necked Antelope was actually thought up in the Disney Studio rather than occurring in the wild steppes of East Africa.

This unusual and elegant beast is a great survivor - and it possibly owes its continued existence to its wonderfully long neck. When you realize how high the animal stretches in order to feed, you can imagine many an African folk-story being handed down through the generations to explain how it came to get that way.

A Mushroom Death Suit

Jae Rhim Lee is a visual artist, designer, and researcher whose work proposes unorthodox relationships between the mind/body/self and the built and natural environment. The Infinity Mushroom will be a unique strain of fungi that will be trained to decompose bodies and remediate the industrial toxins in bodies. Using mycological tissue culture and growing techniques, Jae Rhim Lee is training fungi to consume her own body tissue and excretions.

The Mushroom Death Suit is basically a fitted organic cotton suit with a crocheted netting on top in a pattern resembling the growth of mushroom mycelium, and the netting is where the Infinity Mushroom spores will initially grow.

Ten Delightfully Weird Museums

Most of us spent some chunk of our formative years in one museum or another. Scifi addicts are no strangers to the pleasures of accumulation, organization, and presentation of knowledge (not to mention obsessive collections of stuff).

Sometimes that knowledge is of a broad subject which is well-regarded. Sometimes it's a little more niche-oriented. Have a look at the weird, wild, and wonderful museums that no one expected to see.

How Big Companies Got Their Names

Digging Up Shakespeare

South African anthropologist Francis Thackeray, the director of the Institute for Human Evolution at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, has asked permission to open the graves of William Shakespeare and his family to determine, among other things, what killed the Bard and whether his poems and plays may have been composed under the influence of marijuana.

But while Shakespeare's skeleton could reveal clues about his health and death, the question of the man's drug use depends on the presence of hair, fingernails or toenails in the grave. Thackeray conducted a study which found evidence of marijuana residue on pipe fragments found in Shakespeare's garden. Some Shakespearian allusions, including a mention of a 'noted weed' in Sonnet 76, spurred Thackeray's inquiry into whether William Shakespeare may have used the mind-altering drug for inspiration.

MS-DOS Turned 30 Years Old

MS-DOS has turned 30 years old this week. Microsoft's first desktop operating system was launched on July 27, 1981, after Microsoft bought the full rights to QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System), the PC operating system the company acquired from Seattle Computer Products.

During its life, several competing products were released for the x86 platform, and MS-DOS itself would go through eight versions, until development ceased in 2000. Ultimately it was the key product in Microsoft's growth from a programming languages company to a diverse software development firm.

15 Essential Food Photography Tips

For a long time, food photographs tended to be shot and composed the way people were used to encountering their food: laid out on a table setting and shot from an overhead perspective. Stylists accordingly arranged the food to appear good from above, with the items arranged flat on the plate and clearly separated from each other.

Later, romantic lighting, shallower angles and more props came en vogue. Most recently, the prevailing trend in food photography is to present the food as simple, clean and naturally as possible and with little props, often using effects such as selective focus, tilted plates, and extreme close-ups.

Funny Faces Of Divers

Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard, sometimes while performing acrobatics. A diver usually goes so fast that you can't see their facial expressions.

But when a photographer freezes them in the middle of their dive you see very expressive faces. For us, that looks funny. Or weird. I guess it's a combination of holding their breath and the effort it takes to complete the jump.

The Perfectly Preserved Pooches Of Castle Bitov

They can sit and stay - and are excellent at playing dead - but this room full of obedient dogs will never go walkies again. The odd-ball collection of 51 stuffed dogs is the star attraction at the picturesque Castle Bitov in the Czech Republic. The castle's last owner, the eccentric Baron Georg Haas, was an animal lover.

His favourite style of four-legged friend was the humble canine, and he eventually had more than 200 in the castle grounds. When the playful pets passed away, the baron buried the majority of them. But, for a select few, the baron had loftier plans - and the handiwork of the local taxidermist is still being enjoyed today.

Test Your Vocab is a research project to measure vocabulary sizes according to age and education, and particularly to compare native learning rates with foreign language classroom learning rates. My total vocabulary size is estimated to be 17,800 words. That's not bad since English is not my native language. Most adults fall in the range 20,000 - 35,000, with the exact median score being 27,123 words. Test Your Vocab.

Today's Polar Bears Trace Ancestry To Ireland

According to a study in the journal Current Biology, every polar bear alive today can trace its ancestry to one mama bear that lived in Ireland during the last Ice Age. And what's more, she wasn't even a polar bear: She was a brown bear. An associate professor of biology at Penn State University said that her team studied DNA extracted from ancient bear bones.

When the team looked at the nuclear DNA, they found that brown bears and polar bears began to evolve separately from each other around a million years ago. But the mitochondrial DNA, the kind you inherit from your mother, told a very different story. They diverged only about 20- or 30,000 years ago. And that difference is intriguing, and it means there's something weird going on in the history of polar bears.

Russia Classifies Beer As Alcoholic

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a bill that officially classifies beer as alcoholic. Until now anything containing less than 10% alcohol in Russia has been considered a foodstuff. The move will allow ministers to control the sale of beer in the same way that spirits are controlled.

Although vodka has long been the traditional tipple in Russia, beer has soared in popularity, being marketed as a healthier alternative to spirits. Over the past decade, beer sales in Russia have risen more than 40% while vodka sales have fallen by nearly 30%. Correspondents say it is common to see people swigging beer in the street and in parks as if they are drinking soft drinks.
