The historian Edward Gibbon believed that Christianity bore the ultimate responsibility for the fall of the Roman Empire. However, during the third century, the Romans were well on their way to destroying themselves.
Ultimately, the Christians may have disrupted the foundations of the Roman Empire; however their actions hardly destroyed the Romans as Edward Gibbons had implied. The empire was on the decline well before Christianity was becoming a dominant force.
